The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) supports the campaign to make more of St George?s Day, April 23.

CAMRA?s Mike Benner, head of campaigns and communications, said: "We should make more of the English patron saint?s day. There is no logical reason why it should not be celebrated in the same spirited way as St Patrick?s Day.

"It is a great opportunity to bring the community together for a day of national celebration, and no better place for that celebration to take place than in our pubs."

He continued: ?CAMRA?s recent successful National Pubs Week campaign was designed to draw attention to the pub as asset to the community, in the face of closures of so many rural pubs.

"Thousands of pubs staged events to bring in new customers. In effect licensees were declaring that the English pub is alive and well.
?St George?s Day is the ideal opportunity for a celebration of Englishness, and one to which licensees would rally enthusiastically."
