Bitter dragon slaying for Charles Wells pub
St George?s Day was celebrated with a visit from the patron saint himself at a Bedford pub. Staff at the Park, a Charles Wells-owned pub, dressed in full medieval costumes and gave out hats as part of the event.
Pub manager Steve Wilde, of the Park in Bedford celebrated by dressing up as England?s patron saint. His message was: ?Help slay the dragon of apathy for St George... and mix profit and patriotism on April 23.?
?It was a really fun day and everyone had a good time, especially our customers,? said Sarah Buckland, the pub?s licensee.
Charles Wells? Bombardier bus visited the pub to kick off the day?s celebrations.
More than 83,000 people have already signed a petition for official recognition of the patron saint?s day, many registering their vote on www.thevalueofstgeorge.com.
The brewery reported a record 19 per cent rise in sales of Bombardier in the run-up to St George?s Day. It claims Bombardier is the beer most closely associated with St George?s Day with 52 per cent of pub customers making the link.
Nigel McNally, sales and marketing director for Charles Wells, said: ?St George?s Day 2005 has been an outstanding success for Wells Bombardier and has seen us officially become the beer of St George?s Day.?
